Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Promote aging in place by educating builders and realtors on the importance of universal design, integrating wrap-around housing services for older adults, and Increasing education of resident legal protections, landlord tenant laws, and low-income housing.

  2. Transportation

    Increase transit access by supporting statewide planning for older adults and promoting training on the safe use of transportation options for older residents.

  3. Social Participation

    Promote local service volunteer recognition efforts and events. Increase access to community events and activities by collecting, organizing, and disseminating data from local partners on volunteer efforts, work with partners and organizations to support and recognize older adult-focused events, increase collaboration with faith-based networks to offer shuttle services to community activities, and promote and support positive intergenerational opportunities and interactions through child-centered organizations, including schools and other state agencies.

Highway Park Neighborhood Preservation and Enhancement District (2020)

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: This project installed a 10-station fitness trail exercise system in the MLK Sports Field in Highway Park -- the only such amenity in Highlands County. Meant to help residents improve their physical health through stretching, flexing and balancing, the trail also acts as a destination for residents and seasonal visitors to socialize. For years the Highway Park Preservation and Enhancement District requested amenities to enhance the park without much success. But securing funding for the fitness trail spurred the County to invest in Highland Park, including adding drinking fountains, repainting fencing, cleaning up graffiti and resurfacing the softball diamond. In addition, two successful crowdfunding campaigns allowed for installation of restrooms and a new sunshade for the park's playground.

City of Lakeland (2023)

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Trails

Description: The project will create a safe, ADA-compliant, walkable connection to a park and link to three other bike/pedestrian routes that are connected throughout the city to other facilities and trails.
