Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Improve pedestrian safety and improve walkability by auditing existing roadways, providing driver education for older adults, and promoting public transit use. Advocate for additional transit stops in areas of high need and at key destinations for older adults.

  2. Housing

    Increase the supply of affordable housing by reviewing regulations and tax policies surrounding ADUs while also increasing subsidies and tax breaks to developers to incentivize more low income housing construction.

  3. Housing

    Change housing policies to incentivize new, affordable housing development through inclusionary zoning, specifying in any new policies that some percentage of this housing will be dedicated to older adults.

Over the past several years, Miami-Dade's age-friendly initiative has worked to support municipalities seeking to become more accessible and welcoming to older adults. The County established an age-friendly business district in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood, inviting local businesses to prioritize accessibility and inclusive practices. Additionally, the County worked to install benches at several bus stops in the City of Miami. To help municipalities improve outdoor spaces, the county's age-friendly initiative produced an age-friendly parks toolkit. They also provided technical assistance to localities, including several interested in joining the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: This project will use aeroponic gardening as an alternative to traditional gardening methods, bringing residents of various ages together to cultivate plants. The produce will go to community fridges and choice pantries, where older people can obtain food at no cost.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
