The Miami-Dade County developed a community action plan with the goal to create a Miami-Dade community for all ages, where older adults can stay active, sociable, and healthy. The plan has the overarching goals of improving public spaces, increasing mobility, and building safe, affordable housing. Miami-Dade will increase the number of parks in close walking distance to older adults, while assessing accessibility of existing parks. Miami-Dade is planning to redesign streets by auditing existing routes and assessing if they are safe for all modes of transit while advocating for additional public transit stops in areas of high need, i.e. libraries, parks, and public spaces. Finally, the county will advocate for increased funding for low-income housing, and reviewing codes to allow ADUs, which will increase the affordable housing stock.
Action Plan Highlights
Transportation
Improve pedestrian safety and improve walkability by auditing existing roadways, providing driver education for older adults, and promoting public transit use. Advocate for additional transit stops in areas of high need and at key destinations for older adults.Housing
Increase the supply of affordable housing by reviewing regulations and tax policies surrounding ADUs while also increasing subsidies and tax breaks to developers to incentivize more low income housing construction.Housing
Change housing policies to incentivize new, affordable housing development through inclusionary zoning, specifying in any new policies that some percentage of this housing will be dedicated to older adults.
