Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Increase accessibility of public places through new ADA-compliant pathways and upgrades to local parks.

  2. Transportation

    Complete construction of new multiuse paths and improve sidewalks to increase accessibility and make the community more walkable.

    Enhance the built environment through shared-use paths, better sidewalks, and traffic calming features.

Progress Report Download

Since completing its age-friendly action plan, Pinecrest has worked to improve its transportation infrastructure. The community constructed shared-use paths, improved and expanded sidewalks rolled out traffic calming interventions. Additionally, the City made upgrades to its public parks, creating pickleball courts and implementing new programming, including walking clubs. The community also worked to improve disaster preparedness by creating a brochure with emergency contact information and other resources.

Project Category: Public or private transit access

Description: Residents of Miami's Little Havana neighborhood wanted to improve the transit experience for the area's older adults. To do this, Urban Health Partnerships installed a dozen single and double-seat benches under shade trees near high-ridership bus and trolley stops. Little Havana residents use public transit at three times the rate of Miami-Dade County's general populace. Organizers say the new benches provide a welcome place to rest as they walk through the community or wait for transit.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
