Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Create additional green open spaces and outdoor gathering areas by providing incentives for developers, with a goal to increase the number of developers that utilize this incentive by 50%.

  2. Housing

    Create more accessible housing by requiring that universal design principles be used in all new construction of multifamily housing.

  3. Respect and Inclusion

    Encourage age diversity on all task forces and committees to include members over 55 and under 35.

Progress Report Download

Palmetto Bay's progress report highlights efforts to improve parks, expand transportation offerings and support age-friendly housing. The Village installed trails and sidewalks at local parks, along with new, accessible amenities including a pavilion and seating. To help residents get around, Palmetto Bay launched an on-demand transportation service, added bus stops and updated the community's bike and pedestrian plan. Housing efforts focused on aging in place, with the Village working to expand home repair assistance and conduct home safety assessments. Additionally, Palmetto Bay provided technology training to older adults to help them navigate the digital world.

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: To encourage residents to exercise and socialize with one another, the Town of Cutler Bay added accessible exercise equipment - with a shade canopy to keep visitors cool -- to Cutler Ridge Park. Although Hurricane Irma damaged the park during installation, the new equipment now gives older adults the opportunity to improve their balance, strength, flexibility, range of motion and coordination. Project organizers say many older adults visit the park with their children and using the new fitness machines, which resemble playground equipment, can feel more like playing than exercising. Since the project's completion. the Town has installed similar fitness equipment at two other local parks.

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: Three walk audits will evaluate corridors to better serve older residents. Community meetings will review findings that inform future transportation planning.
