Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Implement priority improvements including accessible pathways, seating areas with back support, improved lighting, and age-friendly exercise equipment. Evaluate and upgrade city facilities to include features such as zero-step entrances, elevators where needed, clear signage, adequate lighting, and comfortable seating areas.

  2. Transportation

    Implement complete streets design principles on major corridors, enhance connectivity to the Pinellas Trail, add more sidewalks with appropriate width and surface materials, and increase the number of safe street crossings with adequate crossing times and visual signals. Improve bus stop amenities including shelters, benches, and lighting, increase service frequency on key routes serving senior housing and healthcare facilities, and explore specialized transportation services for older adults and people with disabilities.

In its progress report, Dunedin described its successes related to transportation and housing. The City worked to upgrade its transportation infrastructure to enhance walkability, including an update to downtown sidewalks and improved wayfinding. It also implemented Complete Streets projects. Guided by its multi-modal transportation plan, the community expanded transportation options, offering free shuttle service and expanding existing trolley service. To support its housing goals, the City worked with providers to provide affordable and workforce housing options. They also saw an increase the number of permits issued for new accessory dwelling units.

Description: This project added universal-access picnic tables to the playground at the library. It also created a story walk with signage explaining the city's history and other distinctions.

360 Eats (2024)

Clearwater, FL

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: Many older adults in Pinellas County face food insecurity and lack access to nutritious meals due to transportation barriers and limited cooking facilities. To address this, 360 Eats purchased commercial freezers and refrigerators and expanded storage for rescued food. This enabled its mobile kitchen to deliver over 1,300 chef-prepared meals to older adults at six sites. The upgrade also supported pop-up meal service for hurricane-displaced residents. The project improved health and reduced isolation by bringing meals directly to older adults. One recipient said, "You're really giving us what we need: a real meal," and noting how important nutrition is to him.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
