Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Improve accessibility of public spaces by displaying clear wayfinding signage, providing shade structures and tree cover, installing lighting and offering visitors places to sit.

  2. Transportation

    Identify locations in need of improved pedestrian infrastructure, provide a connected sidewalk network and make safety upgrades to intersections.

  3. Health and Community Services

    Increase older adults' preparedness by enrolling residents in the local emergency notification program, distributing preparedness guidebooks and helping vulnerable individuals access shelter options.

Progress Report Download

In its age-friendly progress report, Pinellas County celebrated achievements related to making public places welcoming and encouraging active transportation. To improve accessibility of County-owned buildings, they added ADA-compliant wayfinding signage and increased parking options. They also worked to make the local airport more accessible. Additionally, they set up public charging stations to allow visitors to charge their phones and other devices. To help residents bike and walk, they worked to identify places to install bike racks at public buildings and created a new trail near the County's animal shelter. Other efforts include installing pedestrian-controlled signals at crosswalks and developing a streetscape and master plan for Palm Harbor's downtown.

Project Category: Innovative home maintenance, repair and support services

Description: The Florida Dream Center helps older adults in Pinellas County age in place, relying on federal grants and other funding sources to assist with home repairs and modifications. However, this funding is typically limited, meaning the nonprofit can only improve homes belonging to residents over the age of 62. To serve a larger subset of older adults, the Florida Dream Center created a program for residents between the ages of 50 to 61. Modifications include installing grab bars and handrails, replacing flooring, fixing holes in exterior walls, painting, rewiring exterior lights and mitigating rodents and other pests. By tapping a wide volunteer network to help make repairs, the Center has since expanded the services it offers to older homeowners.

Project Category: HomeFit Modifications

Description: This project will install grab bars in the homes of residents age 50 or older. These residents have frequently used the local EMS response system and are considered at high risk of falling.
