Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Create and implement an age-friendly parks plan and toolkit and ensure local parks include programming and activities for older adults.

  2. Transportation

    Foster age-friendly transportation, including launching accessible transit vehicles and gathering information about how people of all ages get around.

  3. Civic Participation and Employment

    Include older adults in civic engagement through advocacy training and sharing information about community resources.

Progress Report Download

Miami's age-friendly progress report focuses on parks, public spaces and transportation. The community created an age-friendly park designation process, along with an age-friendly parks toolkit outlining standards for policies and programs. Miami initiated its Safe Routes to Age in Place program, which empowers older adults to identify their transportation needs improve safety in their neighborhoods, including pedestrian safety. Additionally, the City focused on supporting affordable housing, working with housing providers to diversify Miami's housing options. They also provided rental assistance and expanded the number of older adults who qualify.

Description: Miami's housing shortage leaves older adults with few affordable and accessible options. To address this, the project launched a design competition and partnered with architects, universities and health agencies to create ADU plans that prioritize affordability, sustainability and accessibility. Public charrettes and exhibitions showcased innovative designs for multigenerational living. These efforts sparked ideas for aging-in-place housing and will lead to free online plans, helping homeowners add ADUs without costly design work and promoting long-term solutions for inclusive housing.

Transit Alliance Miami (2022)

Project Category: Public or private transit access

Description: Older adults in Miami-Dade faced barriers to using public transit and on-demand ride-hailing services, limiting mobility and social engagement. Transit Alliance launched My Transit My City, hosting workshops and tech training to teach participants how to navigate the redesigned bus system and use free ride-hailing apps. Outreach included flyers, helplines and pop-up events, and older adults enrolled in the Golden Passport program for fare-free rides. One participant said, "For those who are in their latter years, something new is always a bit frightening, but once they try it... they...like it," reflecting restored confidence.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
