Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Support changes to local planning and zoning to create greenspaces and parks, as well as mixed-use and transit-oriented development that supports community access, physical activity and social engagement.

  2. Communication and Information

    Implement programs focused on digital literacy and technology training and help communities adopt broadband options.

  3. Civic Participation and Employment

    Increase awareness of age-friendly workplace practices and promote intergenerational workplaces and caregiver-friendly policies.

Description: This project installed a garden with raised bed planters and ADA-compliant benches -- as well asan historical mural, veterans memorial and wind sculpture -- at the town's new community center.

City of Leadville (2019)

Leadville, CO

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Many residents weren't aware of underused park in Leadville's downtown. To increase the park's visibility, the City revamped the space. They replaced eight benches and installed twinkle lights and a permanent fire pit made from a converted ore cart. Community members chipped in by creating mosaics on planters and painting a mural. The City held a well-attended kick-off party for the park, which featured fire pits and giveaways.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
