Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Educate residents on age-friendly housing through stakeholder resources and virtual speaker series on topics such as weatherization, universal design and accessibility, retrofitting existing homes, and purging and/or downsizing.

  2. Transportation

    Increase transportation options by adding new drivers to existing volunteer driver programs, building partnerships to shape future paratransit policies and services for older adults around the county, and identifying and solving for transportation gaps in the greater region.

  3. Social Participation

    Facilitate social experiences for older adults by providing safe spaces for small groups to congregate at Eagle County Housing Association sites.

Progress Report Download

Eagle County's progress report describes efforts to expand transportation options for older adults, keep residents socially engaged and support age-friendly health care services. The community expanded its volunteer driver program and has advocated for expanded paratransit service. Eagle County offers exercise classes, as well as activities including book clubs, arts and crafts, bingo and card games. Representatives with the local age-friendly initiative meet regularly with community health providers to ensure older adults' needs are met. Also, they partnered with local organizations to offer supports for family caregivers.

Description: The local age-friendly initiative worked to plant a new garden along the Rio Grande Trail. The garden features drought-resistant pollinator plants. To give trail users of all ages and abilities a place to rest, volunteers also installed ADA-accessible under shade trees.

City of Leadville (2019)

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Many residents weren't aware of underused park in Leadville's downtown. To increase the park's visibility, the City revamped the space. They replaced eight benches and installed twinkle lights and a permanent fire pit made from a converted ore cart. Community members chipped in by creating mosaics on planters and painting a mural. The City held a well-attended kick-off party for the park, which featured fire pits and giveaways.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
