Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Outdoor Spaces

    Build a new, ADA-accessible senior center to expand age-friendly services and programming for older adults.

  2. Transportation

    Expand accessible, affordable transportation options for older adults, including paratransit service.

  3. Health and Community Services

    Promote affordable health care services, including dental, vision hearing and mental health care for older adults. Host educational programming on exercise, brain fitness and nutrition.

Progress Report Download

Pitkin County's progress report highlight the community's need for more affordable housing options within the community. Their efforts focused on "downsizing and right-sizing," with County exploring incentive programs for older adults looking to move to smaller housing units. Additionally, they worked to provide services -- such as yard work assistance -- to help residents remain in their homes. Finally, the County worked to expand recreational opportunities, including brain fitness programs, nutrition counseling and cultural activities. They also expanded local volunteer options and hosted social opportunities for older adults, including field trips.

Description: The local age-friendly initiative worked to plant a new garden along the Rio Grande Trail. The garden features drought-resistant pollinator plants. To give trail users of all ages and abilities a place to rest, volunteers also installed ADA-accessible under shade trees.

City of Leadville (2019)

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Many residents weren't aware of underused park in Leadville's downtown. To increase the park's visibility, the City revamped the space. They replaced eight benches and installed twinkle lights and a permanent fire pit made from a converted ore cart. Community members chipped in by creating mosaics on planters and painting a mural. The City held a well-attended kick-off party for the park, which featured fire pits and giveaways.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
