Southern Utah Navajo Reservation, UT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: To combat food insecurity on the Navajo Reservation, Adopt-A-Native-Elder provided food assistance and firewood vouchers to hundreds of Navajo elders. The cash assistance helped older adults access healthy, culturally appropriate food, as well as fuel for heating and cooking. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Navajo Nation recorded the highest per-capita rates of infection and fatalities in the U.S. To help keep older adults safe, the organization also delivered medical supply boxes, which included personal protective equipment, such as face masks.

Fullerton, CA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: Low-income older adults in Fullerton lacked access to fitness resources. The project activated outdoor exercise equipment in four parks and offered twice-weekly training sessions to help participants feel confident using the gear. Instructors guided participants in setting wellness goals and managing chronic conditions. A community garden added fresh produce to the mix. An organizer noted that the project met its original goals, and future plans include expanding classes and adding garden plots near local centers.

Duluth, MN

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: Older adults in Duluth faced barriers to healthy food and social connection, especially in neighborhoods with few events and limited transit. To address this, the organization expanded its farmers markets by adding social zones with tables, games and art supplies, and completed two murals in areas lacking public art. Staff also took anti-age discrimination training and recruited older volunteers to lead activities. The project deepened engagement, improved food access and brightened community spaces. One visitor said, "The murals completely change the feeling of the park... really livens it up and matches the energy of the markets better."

Philadelphia, PA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018

Project Category: Developing projects based on residents' priorities

Description: The Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Association launched an intergenerational Elders' Story Cafe program in Mifflin Park, one of the South Philadelphia's few green spaces. Refugee and immigrant elders -- with interpreters on hand -- shared the story of their journey to Philadelphia with a multigenerational audience. The program provided an opportunity for local youth to gain a sense of pride and identity from the elders' stories while the elders, in turn, gained a forum in which to feel a valued part of the community.

Philadelphia, PA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Resources about housing options, safety and services

Description: An eviction prevention pilot program enabled tenants and landlords to resolve disputes before they escalated to formal eviction filings. The City of Philadelphia's two-month program provided mediation, financial assistance, information and referrals to help landlords and tenants reach mutually agreeable, out-of-court solutions. To do this, the City worked with partner agencies to train 10 experienced mediators in landlord-tenant law. The program also set up meetings between tenant advocates and tenants prior to mediation to assess their situation and offer advice. All participating landlords and tenants reported they were satisfied or extremely satisfied with the pilot. Moving forward, the City plans to use the results of this pilot as a model for a 12-month mediation program. In the long term, the City expects to see fewer evictions, reduced displacement and cost savings for landlords, property managers and the local homeless services system.
