The project provided over 600 rides for people age 50-plus to health care, food pantries and essential services, improving access and reducing stress. Nearly half of the trips were for food, and others connected veterans to VA care. One rider said the program let her visit her church pantry safely and gave her a reliable transportation option.

Description: Northeast Third Avenue in Deerfield Beach is a busy corridor that connects residents to many schools, businesses and medical offices, but lacks pedestrian and bike infrastructure. The City of Deerfield Beach, in partnership with the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization, created an art-filled pop-up safety demonstration at several key intersections along the roadway. To make crossing the street easier, the project temporarily added curb extensions and pedestrian refuges. Artwork painted on a pavement made crosswalks more visible. Additionally, organizers created brightly painted, protected bike lanes and added signs encouraging cars to slow down.
Sunrise, FL
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020
Project Category: Bikeability
Description: The City of Sunrise installed bike fix-it stations and artistic bike racks at five city parks. The fix-it stations, which are free to use, include an air pump and other tools and give users the ability to suspend a bike so its wheels spin freely during repairs. Each rack's design was unique, with their shapes imitating a music note, soccer ball, basketball, baseball and an alligator. Project organizers hope the bike amenities empower Sunrise's multigenerational community to expand their transportation options.
