To expand transportation options to more residents, this project created a call center. This allows older adults who don't own smartphones to access rides hailing services by phone -- something previously only possible through an app. To further help residents get around, Aging Resources provides older adults with up to eight free rides each month.

Project Category: Expansion and enhancement of transportation options
Description: The Council on Aging expanded medical rides so older adults could reach out-of-county appointments in a region with limited transit and few alternatives. Using lift-equipped vehicles, the team delivered thousands of trips, including dozens of out-of-county rides each month. They tracked one-way trips, mileage and unique riders. The donation-based model removed financial screening and raised awareness as demand grew. The program prompted multi-year contracts through 2027 to continue out-of-county trips, improving access to health care, reducing isolation and helping riders keep treatment schedules.

Description: Lake County is home to a high percentage of older adults and people with disabilities, as well as many low-income families. Many of these residents struggle to get around, especially when they need to travel to medical appointments outside of the county. To fill transportation gaps, Lake Links set out to launch a year-long pilot volunteer driver program. They recruited volunteers and scheduled monthly trainings, enabling them to provide rides to older adults in Lake County. Since starting the service, organizers say community support for a permanent volunteer driver program has grown.

Project Category: Capturing data and feedback from residents
Description: The Iowa League of Cities Organizers partnered the City of Marshalltown and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach to hold educational workshops on data analytics. Workshop leaders taught community members how to use publicly-available government data to asses issues important to older adults, including safety, walkability, accessibility, public finance and housing. Using feedback gathered from the community as an information source, the League of Cities demonstrated how to map local mobility features. The City has used learnings from the project to inform decisions about public transportation routes and accessibility improvements. Organizers hope the workshops provide a model for other localities looking to engage the community through open data.
