Sheridan, WY

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Trails

Description: The North Main Association wanted to create a picnic area for Malcolm Wallop Trails, formerly known as North Park. To make the area accessible for people with mobility issues, the organization installed an ADA-compliant picnic table with and umbrella. In addition, they placed seven benches along the trails to allow people to rest during their walk or pause to observe deer, birds, squirrels and other wildlife. These improvements spurred the City of Sheridan to improve a parking area near the picnic table and install a sidewalk from the parking lot to the trails. The City also added a new trail to the site in 2021. Since the improvements, project organizers report an increase in visitors to Malcolm Wallop Trails.

Evansville, IN

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Trails

Description: Many trails in this urban old-growth forest were inaccessible for visitors with limited mobility, leaving older adults unable to enjoy nature. The project converted 435 feet of degraded trail into a raised boardwalk with safety rails, added an ADA-compliant bench and installed signage. Volunteers age 50-plus helped prepare and build the trail, which now connects the Nature Center to animal exhibits and a towering tulip tree. The upgrade has prompted visits from assisted living groups and mobility device users, inspiring plans for more accessible trails. "We want more!" said one group after experiencing the new Mini-Loop Trail.

Belleville, NJ

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Trails

Description: Belleville turned an unused fenced lot into a pocket park to address the lack of green space in its dense neighborhoods, where many older adults lacked outdoor recreation. The project added a walking path, pollinator garden, rock garden and art display areas, with volunteers planting native species and painting rocks. A ribbon-cutting event invited residents to celebrate the new space, which now hosts health fairs and cultural activities. Participants were thrilled, with one saying that they can't wait to host events here, signaling how this transformation fosters connection and creativity.

Fort Lauderdale, FL

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: HomeFit Modifications

Description: Unsafe homes left many older adults at risk of falls and fire hazards. The group upgraded 20 homes with grab bars, stair railings, smoke detectors and motion-sensor lighting, while also adding adaptive showerheads and replacing unsafe outlets. These changes improved safety and independence for residents. One recipient said that the grab bars installed after his stroke made him feel secure and mobile again. Another home received railings after a fall, preventing future accidents and ensuring peace of mind for the family.

Sunrise, FL

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020

Project Category: Bikeability

Description: The City of Sunrise installed bike fix-it stations and artistic bike racks at five city parks. The fix-it stations, which are free to use, include an air pump and other tools and give users the ability to suspend a bike so its wheels spin freely during repairs. Each rack's design was unique, with their shapes imitating a music note, soccer ball, basketball, baseball and an alligator. Project organizers hope the bike amenities empower Sunrise's multigenerational community to expand their transportation options.
