Description: Grand Junction Parks and Recreation created a strength training circuit along a walking path in Sherwood Park. To achieve this, GJPR installed four pieces of equipment for working out leg, arm and core muscles, including a rowing machine, sit up and pull up station and leg press. The park once housed similar fitness equipment, but GJCR had to remove it in the mid-nineties due to rot. Today, many residents of the surrounding neighborhoods are 50 and older, and the new equipment gives them an option for a cardio workout and strength training. The fitness stations are available to the public seven days a week and those interested can register for free instruction on how to use them.

Description: Older adults and residents with mobility challenges had limited access to a riverfront area due to unsafe parking and difficult entry points. The City of Houston added a clearly marked parking lot with accessible spaces and improved access to nearby park features, reducing congestion and making the space easier to use. Additional upgrades included seating, signage and a playground that support safe walking, gathering and recreation. One older resident said the changes made it easier to visit with her grandchildren while enjoying the walking paths and time with neighbors. The improvements expanded daily use and created infrastructure to serve residents over time.

Description: The City of Kingston installed two chess tables with seating at its waterfront T.R. Gallo Wes Strand Park. Dubbed a chess playground, the facilities are meant to allow people of all generations to play chess or checkers. In addition to tables and benches, the City added an accessible, concrete sidewalk and improved landscaping onsite. With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new tables gave residents a safe, outdoor space to gather.
