Woodstock, IL

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Trails

Description: An overgrown section of Emricson Park kept older adults and families from enjoying its natural beauty. The city transformed the space by clearing the woods, adding a crushed limestone trail, natural seating and bilingual educational signage. A grand opening featured forest therapy walks and Cycling Without Age rides, drawing enthusiastic participation. The new trail improves access for all ages and strengthens Woodstock's age-friendly vision, paving the way for an inclusive playground planned nearby.

Three Forks, MT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020

Project Category: Trails

Description: The City of Three Forks improved its Headwaters Trail system by installing benches and bike racks, as well as signage displaying trail directions and mileage. Project organizers placed the new benches at prime locations for viewing wildlife. The City also modified the pavement where trails cross local streets to make them easily passable for wheelchair users. These improvements helped bolster community support for the Jefferson Trail Loop -- a new trail within the Headwaters system.

Newport, VT

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Trails

Description: Newport's downtown sits on the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog, which extends north to Canada. But because privately-owned businesses and homes cut off the Newport's downtown from the lake, public access to the water was limited. With its Look to the Lake initiative, the town hoped to reorient itself to take advantage of lake activities -- something town officials hoped would have economic development benefits. When a local business owner offered up his private land to create a pedestrian connector trail and boat docks, the City was able to develop the waterfront. Grant funding enabled construction of a much-needed bridge at the site. Since then, the City has acquired more waterfront land, allowing it to create new trails and connect existing ones. The City has also added a parklet at the Newport Waterfront Recreational Trail's trailhead. Today, Newport residents have access to a seven-mile lakefront corridor.

Chautauqua, NY

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Residents in a rural area lacked affordable outdoor recreation, and few public pickleball courts existed despite the sport's benefits for fitness and mental health. The project built two courts at the Chautauqua Tennis Center, without fees, and launched with a ribbon-cutting and popular classes that drew participants of all ages. The courts now serve as a hub for active play and social connection, especially for older adults, and have sparked plans for future expansion.

Erie, PA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: HomeFit Modifications

Description: Older adults in the East Bayfront neighborhood live in aging homes without basic safety features, increasing fall risk and discomfort. The project installed grab bars, handheld shower heads, reinforced railings, raised toilets and new lighting, along with smoke and CO2 detectors and window air conditioners. Residents reported feeling safer and more comfortable. One woman with a bad knee said additional upgrades beyond her initial request, including a raised toilet and faucet, made her home far easier to navigate.
