Richmond, VA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: HomeFit Modifications
Description: Many affordable homes lacked accessibility features, making aging in place difficult for older adults and people with disabilities. To address this, Livability Initiative implemented 57 modifications across five homes. It also trained staff using the AARP HomeFit Guide. Laminated checklists and digital tools were provided to standardize assessments and ensure replicable processes. These changes improved safety and usability while raising awareness of accessible housing. One volunteer said, "Hearing that there are so many low-cost solutions, I'm inspired to make changes to my own home and implement these simple ideas."
Phoenix, AZ
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: HomeFit Modifications
Description: Phoenix faces extreme heat and droughts. This has left older residents in neighborhoods with little shade struggling to keep new trees alive, a critical step for cooling streets and reducing heat-related distress. The project supplied hoses, reels and irrigation repairs to 26 households. This project was mostly led by older adults, who also created a watering schedule with reminders. A retired contractor ensured installations and repairs were done safely. These efforts helped neighbors care for nearly 100 trees and avoid trip hazards. One resident said the tools and guidance "gave him hope" his trees would thrive, underscoring the projects role in building resilience.

Corry, PA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Trails
Description: When the City of Corry developed its long-term strategic plan, one of its primary objectives was improving access to greenspace. Volunteers worked to install amenities along the route, including benches designed by local artists and a pollinator-friendly gardens. Project organizers also added solar-powered crossing beacons street intersections to keep pedestrians and cyclists safe.
Chautauqua, NY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Residents in a rural area lacked affordable outdoor recreation, and few public pickleball courts existed despite the sport's benefits for fitness and mental health. The project built two courts at the Chautauqua Tennis Center, without fees, and launched with a ribbon-cutting and popular classes that drew participants of all ages. The courts now serve as a hub for active play and social connection, especially for older adults, and have sparked plans for future expansion.
