Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

  1. Transportation

    Improve transportation infrastructure by acquiring fuel efficient and electric buses, replacing bus shelters and bus infrastructure, reinstating a metro system, and improving pedestrian crossings at high traffic intersections.

  2. Housing

    Prioritize older adults on public housing wait lists.

Progress Report Download

Augusta's age-friendly progress report describes the City's efforts to improve its transportation options. To improve right-of-way accessibility, the City completed an ADA self-evaluation and transit plan. Augusta replaced aging bus shelters and updated its fleet of paratransit buses, which now include ramps and other accessibility features. The community also adopted a Complete Streets policy. To encourage active transportation, Augusta constructed a flat-service bike/walk track. The progress report also details Augusta's efforts to offer employment and educational opportunities. The City partnered with the local chamber of commerce to advocate for age-friendly hiring practices. Additionally, they offered technology training, focusing on older adults' needs.

Augusta Recreation and Parks Department (2018)

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Organizers with the Augusta Recreation and Parks Department noticed people were driving their vehicles into Henry H. Brigham Park, making park users feel unsafe. This project set out to prevent this, keeping a walking track, basketball court and playground area free from cars and trucks. The Department installed bollards, as well as benches -- which served the dual purpose of giving park patrons a place to rest. Additionally, organizers planted shade trees to make the park more appealing in the summer heat. To draw visitors, the Department also worked to increase recreational programming in the park, including Tai Chi classes.

Augusta Urban Ministries (2022)

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Bikeability

Description: Augusta Urban Ministries provided free bikes and equipment, along with safety training, to 25 older adults. Additionally, the organization will offer bike inspections and repairs on an ongoing basis. To build interest in cycling, they also hosted a community bike ride along the Augusta Canal Trail.
