The project added benches and safety and wellness signage and paired these upgrades with community walks and planning sessions centered on resident input. The changes had an immediate effect. One grandmother shared that a bench near the playground now allows her to bring her grandson more often because she can sit in the shade while he plays. Together, these improvements supported more consistent park use and strengthened ongoing collaboration around safety and reducing isolation for older adults.

Description: Mount Airy Parks and Recreation installed decorative benches and bike racks, planted trees and improved signage along the Granite City Greenway to make the area more accessible and user-friendly for people of all ages. Already the most-used outdoor recreation facility in town, the visits to the Greenway increased more than 30 percent since the COVID-19 pandemic. Project organizers report that visitors use the benches and bike racks on a daily basis. They say exposure for this project helped secure local funding and made the greenway more visible tourists. Work is now underway to expand the Greenway by 1.3 miles.

Description: The project addressed the lack of safe places for older adults to walk and gather by creating an accessible walking path and a regulation-size pickleball court. These additions gave residents simple ways to stay active and reduced the need to walk in roadways or rely on limited court hours. Within months, older adults used the new space daily, forming informal walking groups and weekly pickleball meetups. Many said the improvements helped them meet neighbors and exercise more often. The upgrades strengthened social ties, increased park use and established the site as a long-term hub for healthy aging, with plans to add more seating, outdoor fitness features and expanded programming.
