Description: Older adults facing homelessness in Salt Lake County often lacked internet access, leaving them isolated and unable to complete critical applications. The Road Home installed high-speed Wi-Fi throughout its Resource Center and began digital literacy training for residents. The upgrade enabled older adults to reconnect with family, apply for housing and benefits and manage chronic conditions online. One resident, estranged from his family for eight years, used the new connection to find and speak with his brother, showing how digital access can restore both stability and hope.

Description: Older adults in Georgetown needed digital literacy skills to manage daily tasks and stay connected, a gap widened by the pandemic. The library converted a storage space into a computer lab and offered classes in English and Spanish, teaching email, internet basics and office software. More than 40 certificates were awarded, and participants often practiced outside class, boosting library use. Graduates reported confidence in using technology for work and personal needs. One participant said she was grateful for the experience, showing how the program opened doors for older adults and strengthened community ties.

Project Category: Public spaces improvements to increase high-speed internet availability

Description: Staff at the Upshur County Public Library hoped to turn an unsafe and unsightly building on the library's campus into a more useful space. To give visitors a space to access free Wi-Fi -- as well as relax, socialize and read -- the library worked to replace the building with an outdoor living room. After tearing down the structure, leveling out the site and seeding new grass, the library outfitted the space with ADA-compliant picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and planter boxes. They also installed outdoor charging stations to help residents access the internet, even while the library is closed. Volunteers with the West Virginia Master Gardeners planted native flowers onsite, and now use the greenspace to host gardening trainings. Organizers say the parklet is an important amenity for residents who lack access to greenspace.
