Description: To improve bikeability in New Orleans' Algiers neighborhood, this project added bike racks, a bicycle repair station and decorative lighting along a three-block section of Kabel Drive, the area's major commercial corridor.

Description: This project will provide older adults with free refurbished bicycles, as well as maintenance, repair, riding skills and safety instruction at a one-day event. Participants will also receive a bike helmet, lock and lights.

Description: People's Advocacy for Trails Hawaii installed three bikeshare stations in Kailua-Kona, which doubled ridership. Additionally, they offered a monthly adult bike safety skills class to older adults, a rapidly growing demographic of cyclists. Not owning a bike was no excuse -- PATH provided bikeshare bikes for anyone interested in the safety classes. The organization also worked with county partners to offer free bikeshare membership for up to 100 constituents of a local community health center.

Description: To help people navigate downtown Cedar City without a car, this project installed bus shelters, benches and bike racks. Additionally, project organizers added picnic tables at the site of a local farmers market.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019
Project Category: Roadway/sidewalks/crosswalk improvement
Description: The Iron City Tourism Bureau hoped to improve walkability along three blocks of the Cedar City's University Boulevard. To do this, the organization created an artistic crosswalk at a busy intersection, which both beatified the crossing and made it more visible to drivers. The Bureau also commissioned a mural nearby to commemorate the city's connection to Utah's national parks. To encourage people to walk and gather, they installed benches along the boulevard. New signs directed pedestrians to nearby attractions and services. Following the improvements, the Bureau reported slower traffic speeds. More murals and crosswalk art are in the works and the Bureau is advocating for bike lanes in the neighborhood.
