The lawn outside the Knight Memorial Library became a community hub during the COVID-19 pandemic, when community activities moved outdoors. The lawn, however, was not accessible to people using wheelchairs, parents pushing strollers or residents with mobility challenges. The Providence Community Library modified the lawn's entrances and installed an ADA-compliant concrete ramp to connect the space with sidewalks and the nearby parking lot. To make the space more appealing, they also hung a welcome banner, planted flower gardens and added tables, seating and lawn games to the space. Project organizers report the improvements have allowed more people to enjoy community activities, including the neighborhood's weekly farmers market.

Description: To promote walkability, economic development and better quality of life for residents, the Chicago Department of Transportation created a replicable prototype for a People Spot. Consisting of a wooden platform, the People Spots transform on-street parking spaces into outdoor patios. To help neighborhood groups set up their own People Spots, the City published construction plans and an assembly manual for the parklets online. Part of the City's Livable Streets Program, organizers say the temporary infrastructure helps neighborhoods overcome economic hardship by encouraging residents to walk and frequent local businesses. The City installed its first People Spot in the South Side Chatham neighborhood in 2018. That iteration measured about six feet wide by 20 feet long, but the platforms can be as long as 80 feet.

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places
Description: The large concrete plaza near the Van Ness Metrorail Station was barren and lifeless. Calling themselves the Van Ness Social Club, a group of residents and local organizations got together to create a temporary town square onsite. They created an invitation that read, in part: Get to know your neighbors at a good old fashioned social. We'll meet each other on the plaza...and learn some dance steps...drink tea, eat cake, play games...and have conversations with each other. The gathering featured life-sized checkers, dancing, free ice cream and yoga. After the plaza party, the newly acquainted neighbors were filled with ideas for future gatherings: a community potluck, a clothing swap meet, relay races, birthday parties, game nights, pizza nights and a Halloween party.

Description: This project will provide volunteer transportation services to older adults in a rural community. The organization will recruit, hire and train new volunteer drivers, distribute flyers and initiate community outreach.

Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: Amos House, which serves unhoused and unemployed people and those living in poverty, developed a volunteer-managed garden to provide fresh ingredients for the organization's soup kitchen. Amos House installed four raised garden beds and two containers for growing herbs. The organization relied on labor from participants in its carpentry program and planted seeds donated by a local farm. Following construction of the 900-square-foot garden, Amos House recruited 20 volunteers age 50 and older to tend the garden. In the summer of 2019, the garden yielded produce valued at 6,500, which they used to prepare 15,000 meals. Residents of Amos House's shelter programs participate in gardening and harvesting, which project organizers say represented an important social activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.
