Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Identify and publicize home modification assistance programs for older adults, allowing them to age in place.

  2. Transportation

    Provide training to older adults on how to use local public transportation options, as well as how to obtain bus passes.

  3. Outdoor Spaces

    Ensure park revitalization projects include age-friendly design elements. Promote the use of universal design guidelines for newly constructed buildings.

Project Category: Engaging people in transportation options/safety

Description: To introduce older adult residents to ridehailing options, the Rhode Island College Foundation launched a workshop titled It's Uber Easy to Get a Lyft. More than 70 older adults from seven towns attended the workshops, which taught them how to download a smartphone app to hail rides. A majority of participants reported they gained confidence using the services following the training. Organizers hope this helps older adults retain mobility, even when they no longer feel comfortable driving themselves.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: The project will conduct four walk audits to identify pedestrian safety challenges. Findings will be presented at community meetings and forwarded to the Department of Planning and Development.
