Description: As part of efforts to activate space and increase the vitality of Columbia's downtown, this project created the city's first parklet. Parklets transform on-street parking spaces into public gathering spaces. Originally intended to be temporary, Columbia's miniature park consists of a ground-level, fenced-in deck featuring an art installation, a cafe table and chairs and new planters. While several nearby restaurants lack outdoor seating space, the parklet remedied this, giving visitors a space to eat and socialize. To gather public feedback about the new space, city staff displayed a QR code onsite, which linked to an online survey. Spurred by the success of this project, organizers made plans to add more parklets downtown. City staff have also looked into creating a parklet ordinance, which would allow local businesses to create similar spaces in the future.

Central Falls, RI

Description: Central Falls has little green space and faces heat and health challenges, leaving older adults without safe outdoor areas. The project revitalized Phillips Street Park with raised garden beds, a paved patio, shade structure and seating, including chess tables and benches. A musical play feature was added for children, creating a multigenerational space for gardening, learning and socializing. One 50-plus neighbor said that she thought this park and the project itself was exactly what Central Falls needed, reflecting strong community support.

Rolling Fork, MS

Description: In Rolling Fork, residents had few safe places downtown to walk or linger, a challenge made more acute after a tornado left the area struggling to recover. For older adults, limited walkable space meant fewer chances to stay active and connect with neighbors during a period marked by stress and isolation. Lower Delta Partnership responded by creating a walking path around the downtown square, using bright painted designs and public art to improve visibility and draw people in. ADA-compliant benches and trash receptacles were placed along the route, allowing walkers to rest comfortably and return more often. Volunteers helped bring the space to life and launched the path with a community event that encouraged use. The route is now part of daily routines for older adults and other residents, and it has become a visible sign of hope downtown. A local gym owner said the length and bench spacing made it easier for older adults to walk multiple laps without feeling intimidated.
