In rural Cavalier County, limited grocery hours and staffing threatened food access for some who faced long drives in harsh weather. To keep the store viable and improve convenience, the project introduced a self-service model with keyfob entry to enable 24/7 access, security cameras and a new point-of-sale system. Volunteers, many age 50-plus, helped install the technology and train members. Residents now shop anytime, reducing travel burdens and supporting aging in place. "I think the key fob idea is great... you can go whenever you want," said one local teacher.

Honokaa, HI

Description: Food insecurity surged in rural Honokaa during the pandemic, leaving many older adults isolated and struggling to afford groceries. The project repaired the temple's kitchen roof, upgraded electrical circuits and added a three-door refrigerator, enabling safe storage and preparation of more than 25,000 meals annually. These improvements strengthened a program now serving over 500 weekly meals and grocery bags and paved the way for intergenerational cooking classes that teach economical meal planning. The upgrades also position the temple as a backup emergency shelter during disasters.
Providence, RI

Description: Older adults in Providence often walked to food pantries, but heavy groceries and long outdoor waits made access difficult and undignified. The project distributed grocery carts to 175 guests and created an indoor waiting area with sturdy seating, easing transport of up to 30 pounds of food and providing comfort during high-volume visits. These changes removed a major barrier to food access, helped older adults remain independent. The pantries are now welcoming spaces that connect guests to additional health services.
Topeka, KS

Description: Food insecurity and poor nutrition challenged older adults in Topeka. The organization built a temperature-controlled greenhouse and picnic area to provide fresh produce year-round and a space for social connection. Residents learned gardening techniques and shared crops, while volunteers installed benches and solar lighting. "Standing back and seeing the final product was rewarding," said a project lead. The greenhouse now supports cooking classes and partnerships with local gardens, creating long-term access to healthy food and education on nutrition.

Description: Devils Lake Park District created an urban fishing pond in Ruger Park to give older adults and other residents safe, easy access to a favorite pastime. The project dredged the pond, installed a handicap-accessible fishing pier and added signage, creating a spot near walking paths and assisted living facilities. The pond now offers a convenient place for fishing and social interaction. "So awesome that the kids can ride their bikes up to fish whenever they want now," said one resident, reflecting the project's impact on community access.

Description: Project organizers planted fruit trees and native plants, enhancing a new garden on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa powwow grounds. The community gardening space featured turtle-shaped pots, which hold flowers and plants -- such as sweet grass and silver sage -- needed for traditional medicines. The Committee hopes fruit from the trees will feed community members and visitors to the annual Powwow celebration. Additionally, the popularity of the turtle-themed planters inspired a fundraising idea. Powwow organizers plan to create similar planters to sell in the future, with proceeds going toward running the Powwow.
