In Kaunakakai, where many older adults lacked internet access or confidence using technology, the foundation created an outdoor Wi-Fi hotspot and digital learning space. Volunteers and a technology educator taught kupuna how to use their phones, send photos, manage calendars and access telehealth tools. More than 40 participants attended, often staying beyond class to practice new skills. The project fostered a sense of pride and connection, with high school students helping participants learn hands-on. One instructor said, "It was a pleasure to help and give the students some hands-on experience," reflecting the shared spirit of learning the program inspired.

Description: Staff at the Upshur County Public Library hoped to turn an unsafe and unsightly building on the library's campus into a more useful space. To give visitors a space to access free Wi-Fi -- as well as relax, socialize and read -- the library worked to replace the building with an outdoor living room. After tearing down the structure, leveling out the site and seeding new grass, the library outfitted the space with ADA-compliant picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and planter boxes. They also installed outdoor charging stations to help residents access the internet, even while the library is closed. Volunteers with the West Virginia Master Gardeners planted native flowers onsite, and now use the greenspace to host gardening trainings. Organizers say the parklet is an important amenity for residents who lack access to greenspace.

Description: Maui Academy of Performing Arts improved a public gathering space that was uncomfortable and difficult for older adults to use due to narrow, unstable seating. The lack of supportive furniture limited how long residents could sit, socialize and gather before or after arts activities. The project replaced existing furniture with stable tables and chairs designed for comfort across ages, body types and abilities. Volunteers of all ages helped select and install the furnishings. Soon after reopening, older adults and families gathered in the space following performances, with residents expressing appreciation for its comfort. The upgraded space now supports longer visits and future programming, strengthening everyday opportunities for social connection in the arts district.
