Description: Older adults in Georgetown needed digital literacy skills to manage daily tasks and stay connected, a gap widened by the pandemic. The library converted a storage space into a computer lab and offered classes in English and Spanish, teaching email, internet basics and office software. More than 40 certificates were awarded, and participants often practiced outside class, boosting library use. Graduates reported confidence in using technology for work and personal needs. Description: Many older adults lacked computers or internet at home, leaving them disconnected and unable to join virtual programs. The project created a computer lab with desktops, printer and accessories, and introduced MySeniorCenter software for activity sign-ups and networking. Training sessions and partnerships supported digital literacy and safe online practices. These upgrades help older adults connect with family, join online classes and engage with other centers nationwide. One participant said learning the system gave her confidence: "I now have a knowledgeable resource when I need help."

Project Category: Public spaces improvements to increase high-speed internet availability

Description: Staff at the Upshur County Public Library hoped to turn an unsafe and unsightly building on the library's campus into a more useful space. To give visitors a space to access free Wi-Fi -- as well as relax, socialize and read -- the library worked to replace the building with an outdoor living room. After tearing down the structure, leveling out the site and seeding new grass, the library outfitted the space with ADA-compliant picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and planter boxes. They also installed outdoor charging stations to help residents access the internet, even while the library is closed. Volunteers with the West Virginia Master Gardeners planted native flowers onsite, and now use the greenspace to host gardening trainings. Organizers say the parklet is an important amenity for residents who lack access to greenspace.
