Fort Worth, TX
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Older adults visiting Al Hayne Memorial Park often arrive on foot to view the park's collection of public art installations. But nearby sidewalks were challenging to navigate, particularly for people with mobility challenges, as growing tree roots and setting earth resulted in an uneven walking surface. To make the four-block walking route more accessible and welcoming, Lancaster District Historic hosted a series of community work days. Volunteers addressed trip hazards, removed dead trees and painted over graffiti-covered walls. Since the cleanup, residents have volunteered to keep the space clean by collecting litter.
Knik-Fairview, AK
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Settler's Bay Park in Mat-Sui Valley is a sanctuary for residents and tourists seeking to view migratory birds and spawning salmon. To make the park ADA-compliant, the Anchorage Great Land Trust installed an accessible scenic overlook platform with seating. The platform enables park visitors of all ages and abilities to enjoy majestic views of Cook Inlet from the area's only coastal park.
Hallowell, ME
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Flooding wiped out picnic tables at Granite City Park, limiting access for older adults and visitors with mobility challenges. To restore usability, Vision Hallowell installed an ADA-accessible picnic table on a level platform with a smooth path from the parking lot and added bike racks for cyclists. Volunteers prepared the site, and the group hosted a celebration honoring decades of park improvements. These upgrades created durable amenities that enhance recreation and social connection. One local leader said the changes allow "people of all abilities to take in the environment and community."

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Digital Connectivity for Disasters
Description: Older adults faced delays in receiving critical health updates during emergencies when information changes rapidly. The health department launched a mobile app for real-time alerts and daily health tips, promoted through health fairs and social media. The app now speeds emergency communication, reduces misleading information and strengthens trust in local health authorities. It also helps residents find services like flu clinics and will support future features such as payment integration. One user said it made it so easy to find a clinic right in her own town, underscoring its role in keeping people informed and prepared.
