Hallowell, ME

Description: An ADA-accessible ramp now spans the steep bank separating Granite City Park's parking lot from Hallowell's popular waterfront boardwalk and boat ramp. Vision Hallowell and the Hallowell All Age-Friendly Committee designed the 24-foot aluminum ramp to be installed seasonally, for use in the spring, summer and fall months. It joins several municipal ramps and docks that give residents access to the Kennebec River. While Hallowell has no town square, the waterfront fills this role. Thanks to the new ramp, older adults, those with mobility challenges and parents pushing baby strollers are now able to access the city's waterfront bulkhead, a center of activity featuring dozens of colorful Adirondack chairs.

Description: Many residents in Vallecitos live without high-speed internet or even cellphone service. Because of these coverage gaps, the Vallecitos Library and Community Center is one of the only places people can get online to access community services and socialize with their neighbors. To make the facility more accessible for people of all ages, the library built a covered walkway and footbridge that connects from the parking lot into the building. This project installed metal panels and support posts, which allow the walkway to withstand high winds, provide shade from the sun and shield residents from rain.

Description: Older residents on Long Island faced isolation as mobility challenges kept them from beaches, a cornerstone of community life. The council purchased and assembled a beach wheelchair, promoted its availability and trained volunteers to manage its use. This simple addition restored access to gatherings and natural spaces, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy the shoreline safely. One older resident who had stopped visiting her favorite beach can now return, and a child's wish for her grandmother to attend a beach birthday party was fulfilled.

Description: Organizers with Action Services noticed that many participants in their day program faced solitary, sedentary lives at home. So they set out to create an outdoor therapy and gathering space, designed to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities. First, volunteers poured a concrete slab to serve as a play surface. They then added a basketball hoop and oversized checkerboard painted on the pavement. They also installed benches and picnic tables onsite. To give community members access to fresh, healthy produce, they set up garden boxes for growing fruits and vegetables and planted fruit trees. Organizers say the improvements have led to more older adults spending time outdoors, actively participating in activities.
Heber Springs, AR

Description: An aging electrical system threatened food safety and posed a fire hazard at the county's largest free meal site. Frequent breaker failures risked spoiling food for older adults who rely on hot meals three times a week. The kitchen replaced the outdated breaker box and 24 breakers, relocating the system away from a wet area to meet safety codes. This upgrade ensures stable power for cooking and cold storage, protecting food supplies and allowing the kitchen to continue serving thousands of meals safely for years to come.
