Virginia City, MT

Description: Virginia City's historic library and museum were inaccessible to many older adults and visitors with mobility challenges. The project funded a six-month accessibility study, including public workshops and an online survey, resulting in a detailed report with prioritized improvements. It also produced schematic designs for ramps and parking. The effort raised awareness and prompted officials to include access goals in planning documents. One older adult who is a resident said he stopped visiting because of stairs and urged changes so he could "check out books and DVDs like he used to."

Saco, ME

Description: Saco is a coastal community with seven miles of sandy beaches. Until recently, there was no beach access for people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. That changed thanks to the purchase and installation of three ADA-compliant beach mats. The mats run from a parking lot to the high tide mark, as well as parallel to the beach. Grant funding from AARP also helped Saco attract a donation from the local Rotary Club to purchase a beach wheelchair and beach walker. Lifeguards manage and loan out the accessibility equipment.
Tampa, FL

Description: Blind and visually impaired residents had few ways to experience live arts in Tampa. The Center introduced audio description for performances, trained describers, installed an assistive listening system and offered Braille brochures. It also hosted a tactile art exhibit and a Braille lecture during Blind Awareness Month. Two guests who attended one of the shows said they were "beyond thrilled" and took extra Braille brochures to share with their community.

Project Category: Bikeability
Description: Riding a bicycle into downtown Conway once involved a search for bike racks, which were in short supply. To fix this, Conway Downtown Partnership created a bike corral. Volunteers painted a brightly colored mural on the pavement to define the corral space, which features a bike rack. The corral supplies a safe, convenient place to park a bicycle and gives cyclists a place to gather and socialize before and after rides.

Description: A combined community garden and digital learning hub will be created for older adults. The space will support gardening, technology use and social connection.
