AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: Older adults and people with mobility challenges could not access the library's basement meeting rooms, limiting participation in art classes and community events. The project installed three chairlifts on two stairwells, creating safe, reliable access and plans to add a wheelchair for convenience. These improvements ensure long-term accessibility for older adults and people with disabilities. "The chairlifts will ensure that our art group will be able to continue to use the room we rent downstairs... We are very excited," said a participant.
Emmett, ID
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: To overcome limited hours and curbside-only service, the library installed a remote locker system and built a service patio with benches, giving patrons 24/7 access to reserved materials and a place to sit and use Wi-Fi. The project boosted library use and inspired plans for similar units in new housing developments. One older neighbor now visits anytime her helper is available, saying she appreciates having a space to hang out as well as get her library requests from the locker.

The opera house installed a modern system in its 780-seat theater, allowing patrons to borrow headsets or connect their own hearing aids, with volunteers trained to help and signage promoting the service. Newport, NH
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Improved wayfinding
Description: Since the area's mills and industrial plants shut down, Newport's economy has struggled to recover. To attract visitors, the Town of Newport is working to rebrand itself Newport as a recreational destination for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities. To support these efforts, the Town installed directional signs and kiosks on its trail system. The new amenities help visitors navigate and provide information about local activities. Organizers say the wayfinding improvements made the trail system more accommodating to an influx of visitors seeking out safe, outdoor recreation during COVID-19 pandemic.
