Bethlehem, NH
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Improved wayfinding
Description: Cyclists in New Hampshires Tri-Town region needed maps that were easy to read, especially for older riders and those with vision challenges. The project redesigned regional cycling maps with larger, darker fonts and clearer layouts, then printed and distributed them widely to highlight safe routes, trails and repair stations. The new maps are helping riders feel confident exploring scenic routes. "Finally a map with printing big enough to read without being the size of a bedsheet!" one rider said. Plans include adding pedal-assist bikes and hosting training sessions for riders age 50-plus.

Newport, NH
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: Newport residents lacked outdoor space for gardening and socializing, especially older adults in nearby housing. To address this, the town converted an unused parcel into a community garden with fencing, ADA-compliant walkways and raised beds for 20 families. Volunteers helped prepare the site, creating a space where residents can grow food and flowers, connect with neighbors and enjoy the outdoors. Located near senior housing, the garden offers accessible opportunities for older adults and will host events and donate crops to local food programs.
Claremont, NH
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: Older adults in Claremont often struggled to enjoy performances at the opera because outdated assisted listening devices limited accessibility. The opera house installed a modern system in its 780-seat theater, allowing patrons to borrow headsets or connect their own hearing aids, with volunteers trained to help and signage promoting the service. The upgrade improved inclusion and prompted plans to partner with the local adult center to boost engagement in community events while pursuing additional ADA improvements.
