Older adults and people with disabilities often lacked access to cycling options that support balance, comfort and independence. Standard bikes made it harder for residents with mobility challenges to stay active and enjoy outdoor spaces. The City of Reno expanded access through its Adaptive Cycling Center by adding a side-by-side adaptive bicycle and increasing program availability. The center gave older adults a consistent place to cycle using specialized equipment designed for different physical needs. Participation among residents age 50 or over increased during the project period. One participant said, "I cannot understate the convenience of being able to just show up and simply transferring to a bike and going for a ride." The project strengthened the center as a lasting resource for physical activity and independent mobility.

Birmingham, AL

Description: For years, Birmingham's busy Titusville neighborhood did not have a strong north/south connector for pedestrians and bicyclists. To address this, the Freshwater Land Trust installed a buffered bike lane -- the Titusville Connector -- along First Street South for five blocks to create a safe and equitable alternative transportation and recreation route for residents living in and around the community. The bike lane, which is located next to an elementary school and links to the multi-modal Neighborway path, allows residents to reach local amenities and the local bus rapid transit route. The Connector's brightly painted lane runs between the sidewalk and parallel parking spaces, making it the first, separated in-street trail in Birmingham.

Description: Older adults in Providence Housing Authority apartments faced isolation and limited transportation options, especially with looming transit cuts. To help, Recycle-A-Bike refurbished and distributed 65 bicycles with helmets, locks and repair kits. They also taught safety and repair skills during hands-on sessions. Older adults now have a reliable way to travel independently, and some visited the shop for follow-up maintenance. Videos captured riders pedaling for the first time, underscoring how the project boosted mobility and connection while sparking plans for continued bike distribution.

Description: To work toward creating a safe, bikeable community, Bike Friendly South Dallas expanded its Hub and Spoke program, a partnership with local organizations to install bike repair stations throughout the community. Project organizers installed seven repair stations, as well as cabinets filled with tools for repairs, in an area of South Dallas with no bike shops. Bike Friendly South Dallas also provided training on bike repair skills and bike safety to local partner organizations.
