Honolulu, HI
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: When Bikeshare Hawaii launched its Biki bikeshare program, it found that older adults were not using the resource at the same rate as younger people. In response, it invited Hawaiians age 50 and older to sign up for Biki Social Rides. The rides, held in partnership with Blue Zones Hawaii and the Hawaii Bicycling League, included a tutorial on how to use the Biki app to find stations. Instructors also showed riders how to dock and undock the service's turquoise bicycles. Additionally, Bikeshare Hawaii provided each participant with a helmet and a trial Biki membership.
Laramie, WY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: For many older adults in Wyoming, getting outdoors felt out of reach-until a new trishaw rolled into town. Miles of Smiles purchased an electric-assisted trishaw, trained volunteer pilots age 50-plus and began offering rides at local facilities. The experience quickly became a highlight, with passengers scheduling weeks ahead and volunteers calling it "extremely rewarding." One 96-year-old, non-verbal for months, exclaimed "Great fun!" after her first ride. The program is breaking isolation, sparking joy and proving that fresh air and human connection can transform lives.
Pittsburgh, PA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: Pittsburgh's bikeshare lacked options for older adults and riders with disabilities, limiting access to cycling. To close that gap, Bike Share Pittsburgh launched Adaptive POGOH, introducing seven specialized bikes including tricycles, tandem and recumbent models. A secure storage hub was installed at a trailhead, staff were trained to customize bikes and promotional materials were provided to centers for older adults. A kickoff event drew more than 250 attendees. Early rentals and strong interest signaled demand, positioning the program for expansion and creating new opportunities for inclusive mobility and outdoor recreation.

Atlanta, GA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Reconnecting Communities
Description: Westview residents faced lasting impacts from displacement tied to Interstate 20, leaving older adults disconnected and their stories unheard. The Cooperative hosted community sessions to collect oral histories and map displaced homes, supported by podcast equipment and media training. Students helped record interviews and participants shared experiences in restorative dialogues that strengthened intergenerational bonds and inspired advocacy. Plans include storytelling workshops, a mentorship program and a digital archive. One session allowed two sisters to reflect for the first time on their displacement, creating a transformative moment of healing.
Atlanta, GA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: Woodruff Park's game cart allows visitors to borrow games, sports equipment and other recreation items at no charge. To improve the kiosk's appearance and attract visitors, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District partnered with local graphic design students to create highly visible decals. They also used checkerboard decals to convert round park tables into game tables. Finally, the organization purchased new supplies for the game cart, including coloring books, watercolor paint kits and markers and crayons. Following the improvements, the BID used the tabled to host chess tournaments, which attracted new visitors to the park.
