Pittsburgh, PA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: Pittsburgh's bikeshare lacked options for older adults and riders with disabilities, limiting access to cycling. To close that gap, Bike Share Pittsburgh launched Adaptive POGOH, introducing seven specialized bikes including tricycles, tandem and recumbent models. A secure storage hub was installed at a trailhead, staff were trained to customize bikes and promotional materials were provided to centers for older adults. A kickoff event drew more than 250 attendees. Early rentals and strong interest signaled demand, positioning the program for expansion and creating new opportunities for inclusive mobility and outdoor recreation.

Overland Park, KS
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2026
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: The city will add bike racks, a repair station and benches at three community spaces. These upgrades will make biking more practical, provide resting spots and support active trips to recreation and services.
Atlanta, GA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Micromobility enhancements/management
Description: Sidewalk clutter from dockless scooters and bikes and illegal parking near crosswalks made walking hazardous, especially for older adults. To improve safety, the Department of Transportation installed 10 micromobility corrals in busy districts, using quick-build materials like flexposts, curbstops and bike racks. Many corrals doubled as daylighting measures, clearing sightlines and reducing illegal parking. The changes organized shared devices, freed sidewalks and made crossings safer, giving older adults more confidence to navigate city streets. The effort also sparked demand for more corrals and partnerships to expand the network citywide.

Laramie, WY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: Food insecurity is high in Laramie, with many residents lacking access to healthy, fresh produce. To increase food access, Action Resources International created a community garden. They considered the needs of older adults and people with mobility challenges when designing the space, adding accessible, raised garden beds onsite. The beds allow people in wheelchairs -- as well as those who find kneeling uncomfortable -- to tend to the plots. Project organizers hope the new garden provides learning opportunities for West Laramie residents and helps ease reliance on processed food.
Laramie, WY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: Older adults in Laramie lacked accessible spaces for gardening and social connection. Age-Friendly Laramie transformed unused property at the Eppson Center into a welcoming garden with raised beds, a wheelchair-accessible picnic table and a storage shed. Volunteers added a colorful mural and helped plant, water and harvest herbs and vegetables for meals at the center. The garden now offers fresh produce and a safe place to gather, with plans for pathways and expanded beds. One longtime resident said gardening again "brought back memories" and gave him a sense of purpose.
