Description: The project will rebuild a neglected woodland trail by widening paths, adding gravel surfacing and installing benches. A smoother, more stable route will let residents walk, rest and enjoy outdoor recreation at their own pace.
Saco, ME

Description: Saco is a coastal community with seven miles of sandy beaches. Until recently, there was no beach access for people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. That changed thanks to the purchase and installation of three ADA-compliant beach mats. The mats run from a parking lot to the high tide mark, as well as parallel to the beach. Grant funding from AARP also helped Saco attract a donation from the local Rotary Club to purchase a beach wheelchair and beach walker. Lifeguards manage and loan out the accessibility equipment.
Tampa, FL

Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: Blind and visually impaired residents had few ways to experience live arts in Tampa. The Center introduced audio description for performances, trained describers, installed an assistive listening system and offered Braille brochures. It also hosted a tactile art exhibit and a Braille lecture during Blind Awareness Month. Two guests who attended one of the shows said they were "beyond thrilled" and took extra Braille brochures to share with their community.

Description: Outdoor basketball, pickleball and tennis courts will be built to provide low-impact exercise and social opportunities. The courts will give older adults and other residents a nearby place to stay active and gather outdoors.
Fremont, NH
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020
Project Category: Accessibility of amenities
Description: To make Memorial Park more accessible for older adults and residents with disabilities, the Town of Fremont built a ramp from the park's parking lot to the playing fields. Previously, visitors had to navigate a steep dirt path to reach the ballfields. A local Eagle Scout candidate led the project. After the COVID-19 pandemic took hold in 2020, the Town moved many indoor events to Memorial Park's ballfields, so people could attend safely in the open air and practice the social distancing.
