An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Educate residents about aging in place and provide information about property tax relief, accessory dwellings units and reverse mortgages.

  2. Transportation

    Launch a volunteer driver program and provide rideshare training workshops.

  3. Outdoor Spaces

    Increase accessibility at the local library by installing a sound system in the auditorium and making restrooms easier to reach for people with mobility challenges.

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: The Boys Girls Clubs of Stoneham and Wakefield built an intergenerational community garden where older adults can mentor children from the clubs. They installed four garden beds, a rain barrel and a compost bin. They also provided to tools, soil, seeds and other supplies for use in the garden. Today, the Boys Girls Clubs hosts intergenerational programming at the garden, which allows older adults to teach children the value of gardening as a healthy outdoor activity.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2026

Project Category: Engaging people in transportation options/safety

Description: Older adults will take part in bikeshare training that includes classroom learning, guided rides and group discussions. The program will increase comfort using shared bikes for short trips, recreation and everyday travel in three Massachusetts cities.
