Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Create new, affordable housing options for older adults like co-housing, granny flats, and higher density neighborhoods.

  2. Transportation

    Increase options for biking and walking through a new bicycle master plan, expanded bike share programs, and improved crosswalks.

  3. Communication and Information

    Build technological literacy among older adults by providing low-cost computer classes and access to computers.

Progress Report Download

Princeton's age-friendly progress report focuses on transportation, neighborhood public spaces and social inclusion. Princeton supported on-demand transportation services, including the FreeB, a small bus that runs a continuous loop between older adult housing complexes and key locations, and Crosstown, a door-to-door ridesharing service. The City also renovated a park located in the heart of a historically Black and immigrant community. The work added paved walkways, a pavilion and additional age-friendly seating. To combat social isolation, Princeton expanded its GrandPals Program into all four of its elementary schools. A model intergenerational program, more than 130 older adult volunteers read weekly with kindergarten children.

Description: NJAAW will host a design competition to promote age-friendly and affordable housing in New Jersey. The competition will focus on ADUs, single-family, and multi-family housing, judged on middle-income solutions and universal design. Winning designs will be publicized statewide to encourage development.

Trenton Health Team Inc. (2020)

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2020

Project Category: Bikeability

Description: The Trenton Health Team wanted to encourage older residents to take up cycling by increasing the community's access to bikes. The organization launched its bike share program, which they geared toward older residents. They obtained 20 bikes, three adult tricycles and a two hand-powered cycles. Then they piloted the bikeshare during Trenton's annual open streets festival. In 2022, the East Trenton Collective offered up a carriage house on its property as a community bike hub for trainings, events, repairs, storage and lending. To spruce up the site, the Trenton Health Team commissioned a fence made of recycled bike parts and artistic bike racks, as well as signage designed by a local artist. The bikeshare is now permanent, with plans to lend out bikes at the community's senior center.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
