Berkshire County developed its action plan as a regional approach, collaborating with the towns of North Adams and Pittsfield. The action plan commits the county to ambitious goals of addressing gaps in the built environment, enhancing housing and aiding naturally occurring retirement communities, expanding transportation options, improving outdoor spaces, and combating social isolation. The county looks to improve the ability of residents to age in place in their current home or community by creating a wider range of safe, affordable and appropriate housing options, and enable and encourage older adults to take full advantage of services that will allow them to stay healthy, independent, active and engaged throughout their lifetimes.
Action Plan Highlights
Civic Participation and EmploymentTrain older adults to become effective community volunteers, while training local organizations to use volunteers.
Health and Community ServicesImprove the quality of interactions between older adults and medical and social service providers through training and education.
Social ParticipationIncrease social interactions and opportunities for older adults with varying interests and abilities by developing a network of local, older residents.
