Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

    Create new and rehabilitated housing units that meet the needs of residents through best practices like homesharing programs.

  2. Transportation

    Promote the development of transportation infrastructure that ensures safe accessibility and connectivity for all ages.

    Enhance, support, and expand informal home- and community-based resources, services and activities.

Through the creation of working groups, the City of Oxford worked to achieve its goals related to housing access, accessible outdoor spaces and educating residents about health services. The City conducted a housing study, which informs Oxford's most recent comprehensive plan update. To increase the community's housing diversity, they also identified ways to incentivize development and rehabilitation. Additionally, they educated realtors, homeowners and developers about universal design features. To make the local trail system more accessible, the City installed benches. The City also helped residents access services, publishing a list of home health, dementia and caregiver supports.

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places

Description: The organization will install “chat benches” in parks and along trails, each with posted conversation prompts to help people chat with volunteers. These benches will make it easier for older adults to meet others and feel welcome at public events.

Project Category: Supporting family caregivers

Description: Oxford Seniors provides services to older residents, including transportation and meal deliveries and a day service for special-needs older adults unable to stay home by themselves. This project created the Oxford Area Community Resource Directory, a 50-page resource guide for older adults and their families. The guide contains a wide range of information for older residents, from listings for public agencies and health and wellness program to credit counseling, mental health care and home repair services. The organization publicized the guide by sending postcards to 14,000 households and staging a launch event. In 2020, Oxford Seniors and other community groups released an updated version of the guide.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
