Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

  1. Health and Community Services

    Educate the community on dementia and Alzheimer's through a comprehensive series of classes that help municipal staff and businesses learn the signs and symptoms of dementia, and how to deal with dementia-related behaviors.

Since completing the community's action plan, the Successful Aging in Greendale for Everyone working group raised awareness of age-friendly issues in the community. The group held a health fair, which offered blood pressure screenings, memory and hearing tests and COVID-19 vaccination. The village also joined the Dementia Friendly America network, hosted social program.ming for people experiencing memory loss and held an educational series for caregivers.

Description: Two flashing pedestrian crossings and a high‑contrast crosswalk will be added along busy routes to parks and downtown. These upgrades improve visibility, slow traffic and enhance safety for residents of all ages, especially those age 50-plus.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2019

Project Category: Improved wayfinding

Description: After gathering feedback from focus groups with residents, the Greendale Health Department installed directional signs and benches along the village's walking trails. A number of local organizations participated, including the Girls Scouts and students from the local school district. With help from the Greendale Women's Club, they also created and distributed maps of the trails. Project organizers say the effort allowed for community engagement and the new benches, signs and map help residents and visitors better utilize the community's trails.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
