Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Make roads safe and convenient for pedestrians, cyclists, public transit users and drivers by implementing Complete Streets improvements. Conduct regular walk audits.

  2. Transportation

    Expand the local bus system by improving accessibility of bus stops and conducting a feasibility study on new routes and additional operating hours.

  3. Housing

    Work toward more flexible zoning laws to allow accessory dwelling unit construction and explore shared living arrangements for older adults.

Urban Farming Institute of Boston (2021)

Project Category: Addressing community health

Description: Lower-income residents of Boston's Mattapan, Roxbury and Dorchester neighborhoods often lack access to fresh produce. To help residents grow their own vegetables, the Urban Farming Institute of Boston built and installed backyard grow boxes. The Institute provides one-on-one support to participating families, heling them learn about gardening and cooking techniques. They also host a virtual cooking show -- Destination Cuisine -- featuring local chefs and culturally relevant recipes to inspire residents to prepare healthy, delicious meals.

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
