Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Create more access to local services and businesses by enhancing transportation services around the county.

  2. Communication and Information

    Enhance county-wide communications through a hard copy and web-based directory that provides an efficient and up-to-date resource to help the community easily link to local services, and a health fair and expo that provides demonstrations of yoga, massage, tai chi, and Zumba, as well as blood draws and vaccinations, information from Alcoholics Anonymous and mental health counseling to local sustainability efforts and senior center activities.

  3. Housing

    Focus on aging in place and other older adult housing needs by expanding on existing resources and programs that help with downsizing, co-living, home repairs upgrading and paying bills, and working closely with other local workforce housing partnerships in the area.

Description: This project will transform the Roosevelt Center outdoor space into an accessible public greenspace with a winding pathway through sculpture gardens, accessible seating, and connections to the main street corridor.

Songbird Community Garden (2024)

Billings, MT

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: Older gardeners struggled with heavy clay soil and low beds, making gardening painful and limiting produce donations to food pantries. The garden added four tall raised beds, five fruit trees and drip irrigation systems. It also put in kneeler benches and hose hangers to reduce strain and improve safety. These upgrades let older adults keep gardening and boosted donations of fresh vegetables. One gardener said moving to a raised bed let her continue gardening despite physical limitations, while others praised the ease and sense of community the improvements provide.

ABOUT THE AARP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Launched in 2017, the annual AARP Community Challenge provides small grants to local governments and nonprofits in order to fund quick-action, ready-to-implement projects that can help communities become more livable for people of all ages.
