Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Transportation

    Improve fixed-route van service through installation of signage, covered shelters and expanded days and hours of operation. Obtain funding to construct a new multimodal transit center.

  2. Outdoor Spaces

    Create more public restroom options in Brevard's downtown. Evaluate needed age-friendly updates to parks.

  3. Housing

    Recruit local faith communities to assist older adults with home repair and maintenance.

Project Category: Community Gardens

Description: In Brevard's Rosenwald neighborhood, residents lacked access to fresh food and safe outdoor spaces. The city created a community garden with raised beds for older adults and children, added ADA-compliant benches and picnic tables and hosted events to engage neighbors. The garden now offers a place for healthy activity and social connection. One resident shared joy at gardening with her son, who has a brain injury, while another found comfort there after losing a partner.

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025

Project Category: Disaster Preparedness

Description: The project will conduct four in-person trainings on disaster planning a year after Hurricane Helene. Disaster checklists and supplies will be provided, along with a video on survivor guilt and trauma.
