Action Plan Download

An action plan is based on the results of community surveys identifying needs within the 8 Domains of Livability that influence the health and quality of life of older adults. While there is flexibility in how a plan is created and what it will do, every action plan includes a statement about what can be achieved, target dates for goal completion, identification of participating organizations and indicators to measure progress. The action plan is an "active" rather than static document. Revisions and amendments are a sign of program improvement and progress.

Action Plan Highlights

  1. Housing

    Support older adult housing needs by encouraging the development of new housing that is tailored to residents who wish to remain in the community after they age-out of larger single family homes, working with developers to integrate appropriately scaled multi-family and 'age-friendly' housing into the development plans for new neighborhoods, and increasing the supply of safe, attractive and attainable housing in the community.

  2. Transportation

    Increase pedestrian and bicycle connectivity between neighborhoods, parks, schools, employment centers, and shopping destinations by better implementing existing plans, and implementing a citywide complete streets improvement program.

  3. Communication and Information

    Expand the attainability of high speed broadband internet service for all residents by partnering with telecommunications service providers and deploying free public wireless internet access at parks and other public facilities.

Description: Southwest High Point struggles with high chronic disease rates and limited car access, making safe walking routes essential. A walk audit brought residents, local leaders and advocates together to examine hazards near schools and recreation centers. The audit flagged broken sidewalks, missing crosswalks and inadequate signage. It also educated participants on pedestrian safety and empowered them to push for improvements. The effort prompted ongoing collaboration through Age-Friendly Guilford and local task forces, ensuring concerns like unsafe crossings on Taylor Avenue remain central to future infrastructure plans.

Project Category: Pedestrian Safety

Description: A new high-visibility crosswalk with a flashing beacon will be installed at W. Elmsley Drive and Old Treybrook Drive. This project aims to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity for all ages and abilities.
