Clemmons, NC
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025
Project Category: Pedestrian Safety
Description: Pedestrians along Stadium Drive faced unsafe crossings near the library, school and nearby businesses, putting older adults at particular risk due to poor visibility and steady traffic. The Village of Clemmons installed two solar-powered flashing beacon systems at James Street and Bingham Avenue to make crossings more visible and safer, especially at night. The upgrades improve access to key destinations for older adults and students and are expected to build public support for future traffic calming and safety improvements. The installations also help set the stage for broader community discussions at upcoming transportation summits.

Charlotte, NC
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025
Project Category: Pedestrian Safety
Description: Charlotte's older adults faced daily risks when navigating unsafe streets, where missing sidewalks, short crossing times and dangerous intersections made routine trips difficult. By speaking with more than 100 residents age 50 and over, the project gathered detailed accounts of these challenges and used them to refine a digital tool that highlights hazardous areas and recommends improvements. Residents' input strengthened the tool's accuracy and helped prompt Charlotte officials to consider it for planning decisions. The effort built trust and gave older adults a clearer voice in shaping safer street design that supports their mobility and confidence.

Worcester, MA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024
Project Category: Digital navigation skills
Description: Older adults in Worcester public housing lacked affordable internet and digital skills, leaving them isolated and unable to access telehealth or manage benefits. The Senior Tech Savvy Pilot Program installed computers and Wi-Fi in community rooms and offered 12 classes for 120 residents. Eighty percent reported confidence using email and browsing safely, and 75% could now navigate health portals. With permanent access to technology and plans for ongoing classes, residents gained independence and security online. One participant said that now she didn't feel the same frustration and was confident enough to practice at home.

Devens, MA
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: As part of larger efforts to create a community space that honors veterans, Clear Path for Veterans added Adirondack chairs and tables to the Devens Memorial Courtyard. Project organizers hope the space offers visitors the opportunity to sit and quietly reflect on those who have served the nation. The new seating is also set up to facilitate private, face-to-face mental health and integrative wellness coaching sessions -- ensuring veterans and their health care providers had a safe, outdoor space to meet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since installing the seating, Clear Path for Veterans has used the courtyard to host meetings with veterans and mental health professionals, as well as community meals and vaccination clinics.
