In 1906, the Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway built the Potlatch Depot, which served as a warehouse to store excess freight and baggage. The Washington, Idaho and Montana Railway History Preservation Group hoped to offer visitors rides on speeders and rail cycles -- small vehicles that travel along the tracks, which railroad employees once used to inspect tracks and reach trains needing repairs. To do this, the group needed to expand into the depot's annex. They worked to renovate the building, stabilizing its foundation, replacing siding and removing interior walls and floor lumber. Project organizers hope the speeder rides will attract the public to the depot's museum and increase a sense of community pride.

Conyers, GA

Description: The grounds of the Conyers-Rockdale Library offer locals an attractive, relaxing place to work remotely and enjoy the area's natural surroundings. Through its Birds, Benches and Blooms project, the library installed brightly colored benches around the grounds, including one on the Olde Town Conyers Trail, a well-traveled bicycle and pedestrian path. Project organizers also installed hand-crafted wooden bird feeders with live stream cameras, allowing residents to watch birds in person and from home. Additionally, the library bought two weather-protected corkboards to display community announcements.
Hillsborough, NH

Description: Residents lacked a sheltered resting spot and a central place to share community information near the local library and community center. The project installed a community kiosk with opposing benches, flower planters and boards for posting announcements, positioned in front of a historic building. The kiosk is now used daily by older adults, families and children, creating a welcoming space for rest and connection. Feedback has been positive, with residents noting its strategic location and inviting design.
Moulton, AL

Description: To revitalize Moulton's downtown area, Moulton Lions Club created parklets, a mural and temporary, artistic crosswalks. The mural is located along Bylar Road -- the area's oldest public road -- and showcases the route's history. To Project organizers also outfitted several parklets with movable benches, chairs and umbrellas to increase foot traffic and provide rest and shade during events, including the annual Strawberry Festival. In addition, the Lions Club created artistic crosswalks with sidewalk chalk. Each had a local theme, from educating locals about endangered salamanders to paying homage to local resident Jesse Owen, who competed at the 1936 Olympics. Lions Club organizers says they hope the project will spur residents to consider how art can make public spaces more appealing.

Description: A split-level design left the church basement and kitchen off-limits to older adults and people with mobility challenges, limiting access to meals and classes. Project Category: Public spaces improvements to increase high-speed internet availability
Description: Residents in Lapwai lacked accessible spaces for technology use and health resources, forcing older adults to travel long distances for care and leaving few options for social connection. The library responded by installing a covered bus stop and ADA-compliant outdoor seating with 24/7 Wi-Fi. It also upgraded indoor areas with adaptive furniture and charging stations. A telehealth pod with health monitoring tools and digital signage was added to improve access. These changes sparked new programs like adult craft nights and created inclusive spaces for learning, care and community engagement.
