Description: To invite young children and their caregivers to explore Westside Park, the City of Yankton Department of Parks and Recreation created its Born Learning Trail. The City installed a concrete trail in the park and installed signs in English and Spanish along the path. Each sign features activities meant to build language and thinking skills fundamental to child development. To give families a place to rest, project organizers installed picnic tables and benches. The City also commissioned seven local artists to decorate the trail's pavement with artwork related to the activities.

Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: Queen City Bicycle Collective addressed safety and access barriers that discouraged older adults from biking or walking in public parks. Limited bike parking, visibility concerns and fear of theft made active travel feel risky. The project installed new bicycle racks in parks and distributed free locks, lights and rechargeable high-visibility vests and sashes. The additions helped residents feel safer and more confident using parks for walking and biking. One older adult said the vest improved his visibility and made daily walks feel safer.

Description: The city will build permanent ADA accessible restrooms and a drinking fountain at Central Park near the recreation areas. The new facilities will allow visitors to spend more time at the park while staying comfortable and active.

Casper, WY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2017
Project Category: Public or private transit access
Description: The Casper Area Transportation Coalition, the former transit provider for the region, aimed to provide better and safer service to bus riders traveling to and from the Hilltop Center. The bus stop serving those riders -- one of the most heavily-used in Casper -- consisted of nothing but an unprotected bench. To solve this, the Coalition erected a five-foot-by-10-foot shelter at the stop. The project also added a second bench to accommodate more riders. To cover unexpected costs, the coalition obtained a second grant from another organization to take the project over the finish line. In 2021, the City of Casper took over operation of the local bus service.

Description: The city will stabilize an interior walking trail at the park to create a firm year-round surface away from the river. The safer route will reduce fall risk and support walking and exercise year-round.
