Description: The City of Cimarron added a pickleball court to a park already used by residents for daily walks, responding to a lack of low impact recreation and places to linger. Older adults wanted more ways to stay active and social close to home, but the park offered few features that encouraged gathering. The new court was built alongside the walking path, giving residents options to play, watch games or stop and talk. As construction progressed, walkers followed the work closely, building interest and a sense of shared ownership before the court opened. Residents age 50 and over have embraced the court as a reason to move more and spend time with neighbors. The addition has helped the park function as a lively meeting place and aligns with broader city efforts to strengthen walkability and long term use of public spaces.

Description: Mount Airy Parks and Recreation installed decorative benches and bike racks, planted trees and improved signage along the Granite City Greenway to make the area more accessible and user-friendly for people of all ages. Already the most-used outdoor recreation facility in town, the visits to the Greenway increased more than 30 percent since the COVID-19 pandemic. Project organizers report that visitors use the benches and bike racks on a daily basis. They say exposure for this project helped secure local funding and made the greenway more visible tourists. Work is now underway to expand the Greenway by 1.3 miles.

Description: To make Middlebury's downtown more vibrant, Find Your Wings launched a public art initiative to increase community engagement. The organization engaged local artists who worked with residents to create eight sets of wings. To include as many community members as possible, they distributed art kits to homebound residents, schools and senior living facilities, who sent their creations back to the artists. Each set of wings is unique -- one consists of painted plywood feathers, another parrots a monarch butterfly's wings, while a third turns random household objects into musical instruments for passersby to strike. Installed throughout downtown, the installations invite pedestrians to pose and snap selfies. Project organizers say the placemaking effort is meant to foster a sense of belonging and boost the local economy.

Description: In the Adirondacks, vital stories risked fading from memory, leaving older adults isolated and younger generations disconnected. John Brown Lives! launched the Freedom Story Project, collecting dozens of narratives, mostly from people age 50-plus. The group installed a Story Shed at John Brown Farm for on-site recordings, created podcasts and launched a website to share stories widely. Educators are now using these narratives to foster civic dialogue and empathy. "The recognition that comes with the telling of one's story can be very validating and healing... the quiet power of these stories can provide a non-threatening opportunity to grow socially and emotionally," said the executive director.
