Limited infrastructure and seasonal constraints made gardening difficult for older adults and families. The project added raised beds, a greenhouse and a solar-powered system to run a pond pump, along with a worktable, soil and seeds. These upgrades created an accessible space for growing food and learning. The garden now produces vegetables for donation and serves as an educational hub for teaching gardening and food preparation. Plans include hosting a children's camp and expanding community involvement.

Description: Residents lacked nearby spaces for relaxation and wellness, forcing older adults to travel for peaceful outdoor areas. The project added two tranquil spaces to Bustani Ya Upenda garden: a wooden arbor with benches and a zen area with a solar fountain, lighting and sculpture. Volunteers, including older adults, helped build the spaces, which now offer calm and connection. A neighborhood leader didn't use to visit, but now visits often, saying he is impressed by the beauty created with older adults in mind.

Description: The first season of a new community garden revealed gaps in accessibility and education for older adults and neighbors. IMPACT Silver Spring responded by offering technical assistance and hosting gardening workshops, while volunteers widened an informal path to improve access. Partnerships with local agencies strengthened the effort, creating a space for learning and connection. Plans now include drip irrigation, a food forest and produce donations, with a goal to secure funding for permanent walkways and eventually hand stewardship to the community.

Description: An overgrown, sloped area once blocked access and limited community connection. Kindness Farm transformed it into a vibrant garden with medicinal and edible plants, a covered deck and an ADA-accessible ramp. More than 180 volunteers helped create the space and joined over 50 workshops on topics from regenerative gardening to construction skills. The new area now hosts educational programs, art and music gatherings, and will provide fresh produce for donation for decades. As one volunteer shared, "The new community gardening and gathering space has brought so many community members together already... and will continue to allow for more learning opportunities and accessibility."

Description: Allen County lacked inviting public spaces for creative expression and social connection, especially for older adults. Thrive Allen County installed four outdoor musical instruments near a gazebo on hospital grounds, creating a musical playground as part of a healing garden. The project also included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and permanent signage. The playground offers a unique, accessible space for people of all ages to gather and play music. An ER provider called it "an unexpected joy" after discovering the instruments during a break. The project is expected to boost civic pride, encourage social interaction and complement ongoing efforts to make the community more livable.
Savonburg, KS

Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: City leaders hoped to give Savonburg residents a park suitable for people of all ages. The City, in partnership with a local service club, added a quarter-mile walking trail, ADA-compliant picnic tables and benches to the park. Built next to a new children's playground, the additions allow intergenerational families to enjoy the public greenspace.
