Description: This project will engage volunteers and neighbors in DC Wards 5, 7 and 8 to improve walkability and accessibility. The initiative aims to reduce fall risks and strengthen community connections, especially for older adults.
Casper, WY
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2017

Description: The Casper Area Transportation Coalition, the former transit provider for the region, aimed to provide better and safer service to bus riders traveling to and from the Hilltop Center. The bus stop serving those riders -- one of the most heavily-used in Casper -- consisted of nothing but an unprotected bench. To solve this, the Coalition erected a five-foot-by-10-foot shelter at the stop. The project also added a second bench to accommodate more riders. To cover unexpected costs, the coalition obtained a second grant from another organization to take the project over the finish line. In 2021, the City of Casper took over operation of the local bus service.

Description: Many older adults lacked clear, trusted sources for aging-related services. Age-Friendly Forsyth launched a volunteer-driven program that trained 46 Aging Services Ambassadors-most age 50-plus-to share resources and guidance in their communities. Volunteers learned empathetic communication and received resource notebooks and emergency "File of Life" packets for distribution. The initiative created a sustainable model for advocacy and improved awareness of local support systems. One advocate said they valued learning about the programs and services available to him, and felt empowered to help neighbors.

Description: The Move-A-Bull City event will close a 1.2-mile corridor in downtown Durham, connecting two greenways. This open streets event will feature activities and demonstrations of safe street designs.
